Vertical Diaphragm Electrolyzer Demonstrator
Purpose:
Hydrogen and chlorine are produced from electrolytically saturated saline solution.
1.
Electrolytically saturated salt water (1)
The saturated salt water is prepared with hot water of 60-70 degrees Celsius, then two-thirds of the saturated salt water is injected into the electrolyzer, and the saturated salt water is filled into the two collecting pipes and inserted into the two electrodes (two drops of phenolphthalein test solution are dripped into the collecting pipes on the negative poles). The DC power supply shall not be less than 24V.
Pay attention to the phenomenon in the tube. After about three minutes, take off the catheter on the negative pole and plug the small hole with thumb, move close to the flame, loosen thumb, take off the catheter on the positive pole. The small hole is upward, and quickly close the wet potassium iodide starch test paper to the small hole to observe the phenomenon.
2. Electrolytically saturated salt water (2)
Using combustion method to test chlorine gas, the operation steps are basically the same as those mentioned above. The specific operation is as follows: insert a bottomless hard test tube with a diameter of 20 mm on the positive pole, wrap a small amount of red phosphorus powder around two matchsticks with cotton wire, tie the matchstick with fine wire, try to let it hang in the test tube, turn on the power supply to observe the phenomenon (spontaneous combustion after two minutes).
Cautions for use: After demonstration, pour out the solution of the electrolyzer and clean it, so as not to detain the solution and corrode the zinc plate.
